RUFC Club Newsletter - November 2024

Updated: Nov 14

Between all the family fun at the clubhouse, the latest team updates, and recent match reports, there’s plenty going on this month.

11.1 boys off to a flyer

The 11.1 boys have had a great start to the season! They’ve been working hard on a new formation while still keeping their core principles of hard work and teamwork at the forefront. It's fantastic to see them adapt while staying committed to what matters most.

Plus, a couple of the boys, Kyle and Luke, had the exciting opportunity to meet Eileen Gleeson and Kate Mooney at the recent Women’s FAI Cup final. A memorable experience for them, and great inspiration for the whole team!

The Raheny Rookies Academy, for children aged 4-6, takes place every Saturday morning on the Astro (pitch 5). Turnout has been fantastic this year, but we could use more coaches! With more volunteers, each child will receive more personalised guidance.

If your child has recently joined the academy and you would consider volunteering, Paul McAtee would love to hear from you. You don't need any football experience, there's plenty of materials and practical help to get you going. Contact Paul on +353860810458 to get involved.

10.1 World Cup Wednesdays

Each week, our 10.1 boys have been doing "World Cup Wednesdays," and they’re absolutely loving it. The competitive spirit they bring is infectious, and every game has an edge to it - with matchups that sometimes feel as intense as Argentina vs. France in 2022!!

12.1 step into the ring 🥊

Our 12.1 Boys recently stepped out of their comfort zone and into the ring for a fitness-focused team-building session at Bay City Boxing Club. Huge thanks to Neil for hosting. The lads had a great time and can’t wait to return!

The 8.1 boys are kitted out and ready for action

A huge thank you to J. Vaughan Electrical for generously sponsoring our U8.1 team’s kit for this season, our very first! The boys absolutely love the new kit, and it gives them a real boost every time they put it on at the start of each game. We’re so grateful for the support!

 MATCH OF THE DAY

U15s Major 1

Raheny Utd 3-2 Dunboyne

Raheny U15s Major 1 side, coached by Peter, Paddy, and Gar, advanced to the next round of the SFAI Trophy in dramatic fashion, scoring with the last kick of the game at St. Anne's last Saturday. After an impressive season last year, finishing second in their league, the team has faced a challenging campaign in Major 1 this season. Going up against Dunboyne from Division 1 was always going to be a formidable task, but Raheny delivered in style. Despite being 2-0 down at halftime, there was a sense from the coaches that Raheny could pull something out of the game. Their belief proved justified, as goals from David McCann and George McCormack brought the game level. Then, just as extra time was looming, striker James Donovan struck, setting off wild celebrations among players and coaches alike.

Gareth Fitzpatrick expressed the coaches' pride, saying, “We’re so proud of the players; they never gave up.”

Leinster senior league intermediate

Raheny 2-1 MidSutton Sportslink

Earlier this month, our Leinster Senior League Intermediate men’s team extended their winning streak with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mid Sutton Sportslink FC. Despite conceding in the opening minutes, Raheny United fought back with resilience.

Aidan O’Reilly equalized in the 29th minute with a brilliant strike from outside the box, his first goal for the club. In the second half, Matt Pollard sealed the win with a composed finish after slick interplay with Matt Taafe.

Raheny held strong for the remainder, with key saves from Evan White and solid defending from Sam McMahon. This victory marks their fourth consecutive win as they climb the table.

Raheny 3-2 Blackrock College

And late last month, the boys put on another fantastic performance, beating Blackrock College with some impressive goals. Check out the highlights below:

11.3 Girls

Peamount 3-4 Raheny 4

The Division 3 under-11 girls staged an impressive comeback against Peamount away from home, overcoming a two-goal deficit to secure a 4-3 victory.

Having recently lost 7-2 to Peamount in a pre-season friendly, Raheny turned the tables in Newcastle. After a strong first half, they trailed 1-0 at halftime despite several close attempts by Maria Barrins and Isabel Austin.

Raheny equalized early in the second half with Saoirse "Swish" Mulhern beating two defenders and firing a low shot past the keeper. Peamount responded with two quick goals, but Raheny fought back. Lelia O'Regan scored after a solo run and soon equalized off a rebound from Mulhern's saved shot.

With the game nearly over, Raheny pressed forward. In the final minute, a defensive stop from Hannah Kinsella, Elle O'Doherty, and Tia Radley Hoyle led to a quick counterattack. Kinsella raced forward, setting up Swish’s shot, which was blocked but fell to Niamh O'Doherty, who smashed it in, and on her 10th birthday, too!

👏🏼 Player of the match: Lily Fagan 👏🏼 Congrats to Lily who displayed a relentless work-rate, and never gave up from start to finish. True leadership 💪.
